Black Jack Turquoise Ring in Sterling Silver, Size 7.75

Blue-green stone broken into panels by heavy black matrix. This Black Jack turquoise ring in sterling silver, size 7 3/4, is the high-contrast one, built to stand out on the hand rather than fade into the background.

The blue in Black Jack comes from copper and the green from iron, and the bold black matrix cuts the color into panels instead of drifting across it in fine lines. It is the opposite of a quiet stone.

Joyce Benavidez and Jill Monfiletto of Cutting Edge Turquoise, our family lapidary, cut and backed the stone and built the ring around it. Backing is what lets a stone with this much matrix stand up to being worn instead of sitting in a case. Usually the rough passes from a dealer to a cutter to a silversmith to a gallery, and nobody along that chain has seen both ends of it. Here the same hands chose the rough, cut the cabochon, and set it in silver.

Care
Turquoise is porous, so keep it away from lotion, perfume, sunscreen, and cleaning products, and take it off before washing your hands, showering, or swimming. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, and use a silver polishing cloth on the metal only, not the stone. Store it on its own in a dry pouch or box so harder pieces do not scratch it.
