Yes, salmon. And I have a soft spot for this one that has very little to do with wallets.

The leather is vegetable-tanned salmon hide, sustainably sourced out of Reykjavik. I have family in Reykjavik. My cousin and his wife and their kids were born and raised there and still live there, and we get over to see them when we can. So when I found out somebody in Maine was building wallets out of Icelandic fish leather, that was pretty much the end of the decision.

It earns its place on the merits too. People have made shoes and bags from fish leather for centuries, and once you see it close up you understand why. There is a fine scaled grain that nothing else has, and far more strength than something that thin has any business having.

This is the one to buy if you want a wallet nobody else at the table has.

Who makes it

Rogue Industries, in Standish, Maine. Michael Lyons started it in 2007 because he was tired of sitting on a fat back-pocket wallet, taught himself leatherwork, and came out of it holding two patents on a front pocket shape. The workshop runs on solar.

I did not make this and I am not going to imply I did. What I can tell you is it is made in the United States by a shop that puts its own name on it and backs it for two years, which is the same standard I hold the turquoise to.
