Wild Horse Stone Ring in Sterling Silver, Size 7

Cream and white stone, broken up by red-brown lines like an Appaloosa coat. This Wild Horse ring in size 7 is warm where turquoise is cool, which makes it the easy ring to wear with brown leather, denim, copper, and gold.

Wild Horse is not turquoise. It is magnesite, and it comes from a single deposit near Globe, Arizona. The white is magnesite, the red-brown running through it is hematite, and because there is only one source, supply is limited. This one is a 12.5 carat oval cabochon, bezel set in sterling silver, and it is the only one.

Joyce Benavidez and Jill Monfiletto of Cutting Edge Turquoise, our family lapidary, cut and backed the stone and built the ring around it. Magnesite is softer than turquoise, so on a stone this size, backing is what lets it hold up to regular wear. Usually the rough passes from a dealer to a cutter to a silversmith to a gallery, and nobody along that chain has seen both ends of it. Here the same hands chose the rough, cut the cabochon, and set it in silver.

Style and wear
Wear it with a camel sweater, a denim shirt, or a brown leather jacket. It stacks well next to a plain silver band, and it sits comfortably beside turquoise if you want one warm stone and one cool one on the same hand.

Care
Magnesite is softer and more porous than turquoise, so treat it gently. Keep it away from lotion, perfume, sunscreen, and cleaning products, and take it off before washing your hands, showering, or swimming. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, and use a silver polishing cloth on the metal only, not the stone. Store it on its own in a dry pouch or box so harder pieces do not scratch it.
