Only 2 left
A sterling longhorn standing square, horns swept wide, four feet planted. Still on the original Maisel's card, never worn. A single vintage charm with real Route 66 trading-post history behind it.
The ranching side of the tourist trade. New Mexico was cattle country before it was a scenic drive, and the people buying charms on Central Avenue knew the difference. This little longhorn is classic Western and Southwestern at once, ready to join a charm bracelet, hang as a small pendant on a chain, or anchor a travel- or road-trip-themed collection.
- Sterling silver, marked on the original Maisel's card
- Approx. 5/8" wide x 1/2" tall, not including the jump ring
- New old stock, still attached to its original Maisel's card
- Price is for one single charm (two available)
- Jump ring attached so it can be added to a charm bracelet or worn on a necklace chain
The story
Maisel's Indian Trading Post opened on Route 66 in downtown Albuquerque in 1939. Maurice Maisel hired John Gaw Meem, the architect who defined Pueblo Revival, and told him he was "not content with the usual Indian thing." Olive Rush designed the murals across the facade, painted by young artists including Pablita Velarde, Ben Quintana, Harrison Begay, and Pop Chalee. By the 1940s Maisel's was the largest trading post on Route 66. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. This charm came off that counter and never left its card, a small piece of Route 66 and New Mexico history you can actually wear.
Wearing it
Pairs naturally with the buffalo and the elk, or with other Western and Southwestern animals as a little focal piece on a bracelet or necklace. Add it to your favorite chain or charm bracelet, or build it into a travel or road-trip themed charm bracelet alongside other Route 66 and destination pieces. It also makes an easy gift for someone who loves longhorns, steer or ox motifs, or collects vintage trading-post silver. The card is half the reason they'll want it.
