Sonoran & Nacozari Turquoise

Sonoran & Nacozari Turquoise
Cananea-Nacozari region, Sonora, Mexico
Saturated blues and blue-greens with iron matrix.
Where it comes from
Sonoran and Nacozari turquoise come from a cluster of mines in the Cananea-Nacozari region of Sonora, Mexico, just south of the Arizona border. The Nacozari name comes from the copper mining town nearby. Like most of the best Southwest turquoise, this material formed as a byproduct of ancient copper mineralization.
Mining here has slowed dramatically over the past decade. Some of the original Nacozari deposits are considered effectively closed, which means existing material is steadily becoming more collectible. What's on the market today is largely older stock or hand-picked stones from smaller continuing operations.
What it looks like
Sonoran turquoise is known for its saturated, almost electric blue. It's the kind of blue that catches your eye across a room. The matrix tends to be minimal, with darker veins of pyrite or host rock when present. High-grade Nacozari often shows very little matrix and reads as a clean, vivid blue.
You'll occasionally see Sonoran turquoise with a slight green undertone, but the signature is that bright, sky-saturated blue that photographs beautifully and ages well.
What makes it special
Sonoran and Nacozari turquoise sit in that sweet spot where the color is exceptional, the price is more accessible than rare American mines like Sleeping Beauty or Number 8, and the supply is tightening enough that good stones are worth holding onto. Collectors and silversmiths who appreciate clean color without paying spiderweb-matrix premiums often gravitate to these mines.
The cross-border heritage matters too. Northern Mexico has been producing turquoise for centuries, and the artisan tradition that came up around it is closely tied to the Southwest jewelry world. Sonoran and Nacozari stones often end up in Navajo, Zuni, and Pueblo-style work.
Value and availability
Mid-grade Sonoran and Nacozari turquoise is widely available and reasonably priced, making it a smart entry point if you want bright, high-color turquoise without committing to a higher-end stone. High-grade pieces with deep saturation and minimal matrix command real prices and are increasingly hard to find.
If you see a beautifully saturated Nacozari stone you love, it's not a bad idea to act on it. The trend over the past five years has been steadily upward on these mines.
