Sonoran Mountain Turquoise

Sonora, Mexico

Saturated medium-blue with copper-tone matrix from the Sonoran copper belt.

Where it comes from

Sonoran Mountain turquoise is mined in the rugged Sonora region of northern Mexico, in the same broader copper belt that produces several other Mexican turquoise varieties. The deposit is relatively recent in the commercial-turquoise world compared to the long-running American mines, but the quality of the rough has put it firmly on collectors' maps.

Production has stayed modest. The mine works in small runs, and most of what comes out goes directly to lapidaries who cut for the high-end market.

What it looks like

Sonoran Mountain runs a vivid medium-blue to blue-green, often with strong color saturation and clean fields of stone. Some cabs are nearly matrix-free, showing pure rich color. Others carry a copper-toned host matrix that ranges from warm gold to dark brown, sometimes with reddish iron inclusions that bring real warmth to the stone.

What sets it apart from its Sonoran cousins (Campitos, Nacozari) is the depth of the blue and the consistency of the polish. The rough tends to be hard and dense, which translates to a glassy surface and rich color that doesn't fade or chalk.

What makes it special

Sonoran Mountain hits a balance that most Mexican turquoise can't quite match. The blue has weight and saturation without going neon, and the copper matrix adds warmth without overwhelming the color. The hardness means the stones hold up in everyday rings and cuffs, which is increasingly rare in the modern turquoise market.

How to identify it

Look for a true medium blue with notable saturation, often paired with warm copper or rust matrix. The polish on natural Sonoran Mountain is glossy without needing stabilization in the higher grades. If the matrix is tight and tan-to-red and the body color is genuinely blue (not bluish-green), you're probably looking at Sonoran Mountain rather than Royston or Carico Lake.

Sonoran Mountain in our collection

Sonoran Mountain gives us a way to bring Mexican turquoise to pieces where we want rich, contemporary color without going Sleeping-Beauty bright. The slight green undertone and the warm matrix sit beautifully against patinated silver, and the hardness means the stones hold up in everyday rings and cuffs.
