Apache Nugget Turquoise

Apache Nugget Turquoise
Kingman, Arizona
Polished free-form nuggets cut from Kingman's high-grade rough.
Where it comes from
Apache Nugget is a styling distinction more than a separate mine. The stones come from Kingman, Arizona, where some of the largest and longest-running American turquoise production happens. The Kingman district has been mined since at least the 1880s, with material moving through Native and contemporary silversmithing for well over a century.
What makes it distinctive
What sets Apache Nugget apart is the cut. Rather than calibrated cabochons, the stones are polished as free-form nuggets that follow the natural shape of the rough. The matrix runs the full Kingman range, from black webbing to chocolate-brown veining over rich blue to blue-green stone. Nugget cuts let the original character of the rock lead the piece.
How to identify it
Look for irregular, organic shapes rather than uniform ovals or rectangles. Genuine Apache Nugget cabs will have a hand-polished feel, sometimes retaining subtle pits or curves from the natural stone. Quality stones show clean blue or blue-green color with intact matrix that runs across the surface rather than just sitting on top.
